RISD TO STAGE FIRST NEW YORK FASHION WEEK SHOW

Only a couple of U.S. fashion schools have staged runway shows during New York Fashion Week over the years, including Parsons and the Academy of Art University, while most hold shows in May around graduation time. Of course, New York Fashion Week is a much more visible platform, and for the spring 2017 season another prestigious art school will use it to showcase its students' work: Rhode Island School of Design.

While perhaps better known for its visual arts degrees, RISD offers a B.A. in apparel design. Prominent recipients include Nicole Miller, Marcia Patmos, Robert Geller and Sally LaPointe.

Another notable graduate is Elizabeth Hilfiger, daughter of one Tommy Hilfiger, who is actually funding RISD's NYFW debut, reports WWD. Since hisover-the-top runway extravaganzas apparently leave him with money to spare, he is making the event possible through a grant. He will also host it along with Miller and Geller.

According to the trade, 10 recent graduates will be selected to show by a group of industry insiders including The Row’s head of design Francesco Fucci. It's technically not the first time RISD has gotten involved with New York Fashion Week: in 2010, Elle hosted a design competition among 22 of the school's students, and Hilfiger was one of the judges.

These are the stories making headlines on Friday.

Rita Ora will host "America's Next Top Model" with a new judging panel
Tyra Banks will reboot "America's Next Top Model" on VH1 with singer Rita Ora as the host. The comeback series will also welcome a brand new judging panel, including Ashley Graham, Paper magazine's Drew Elliott and stylistLaw Roach, who styles Zendaya and, most recently, Celine Dion and her Vetements hoodie. "The approach I wanted to have as a host and judge to the girls is what my career stands for at this moment in time, which is being a businesswoman and being able to do multiple things at the same time," says Ora. With the rise of the Instamodel, there's no doubt a promising social media presence will also be a judging factor among the contestants. The show is currently in New York City filming 14 episodes to debut this fall. {USA Today}

A fashion startup founder calls fashion tech the "Wild West"
In the latest edition of Glossy's "Confessions," an anonymous fashion startup founder shares the different benefits and challenges of accelerators and incubators for designers (this particular founder has gone through seven different ones), and expresses how fashion tech is the "Wild West" among retailers where "nothing has changed in 100 years." {Glossy}

What happened at Oscar de la Renta?
Upon the sudden departure of Peter Copping from his rise as creative director at Oscar de la Renta, Vanessa Friedman views the designer's reasoning ("personal circumstances") as "unlikely," considering the fact that this is the first time the luxury fashion house — and essentially, a family brand — had brought an outside designer on to fill the late de la Renta's place. "It is possible that, given the circumstances in which Mr. Copping began — a company in the full throes of grief, a market that was slowing because of geopolitical fears — it was never going to work," says Friedman. {The New York Times}

Queen Elizabeth's couture will be on display at Buckingham Palace
The second installment of a three-part exhibition called "Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen’s Wardrobe" will debut this weekend at Buckingham Palace, featuring couture dresses, gowns and capes that date back to before Her Majesty was was crowned Queen. The exhibit, which boasts the largest display of the Queen's wardrobe ever, will run until Oct. 2. {WWD}

SAINT LOUIS FASHION INCUBATOR NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR INAUGURAL CLASS

Categories:Fashion

Photo: Saint Louis Fashion Incubator

Just about everybody, it seems, is dabbling in designer incubators these days, with this very website reporting on a new accelerator program more often than we can keep track of at times. Since January, L'Oréal, H&M, Topshop, Tory Burch and Sephora have all announced plans to launch fellowships for up-and-coming talents in the fashion and beauty industry, with surely more on the way very soon.

The latest offering in this field is one of the most intriguing yet — the Saint Louis Fashion Incubator (SLFI), which is now accepting applications for its inaugural class of six designers. Backed by both the Saint Louis Fashion Fund and Washington University in St. Louis's Olin Business School, the two-year program is set to provide financial support and educational opportunities, as well as a free 7,500-square-foot workspace in the city's garment district, to its chosen members.

And no, you're not alone in thinking that the 300,000-person city isn't exactly known to be a hotbed of fashion activity (I'm from the Midwest! I get it!), but the SLFI is working to change just that. The program has recruited an impressive roster of panelists to select incubator participants, including Fern Mallis, Refinery29 Global Editor-in-Chief Christene Barberich and SCAD School of Fashion Dean Michael Fink. Missouri-native Eric Johnson, formerly the "fashion czar" of New York as the vice president of fashion and arts at the city's Economic Development Cooperation, will serve as the SLFI's executive director.

Between the city's significant arts community, a commitment to its fashion scene and a notably low cost of living, Saint Louis is, objectively, a healthy place to build a design business. It's not like SLFI members will have any trouble finding models to appear in their ensuing runway shows, presentations and lookbooks, either — the Midwestern borough has churned out quite a few top models in recent years, including Karlie Kloss, Molly Bairand Devon Windsor.
